Summer Hunger Challenge brings in more than 2,200 pounds of food

On Tuesday, July 31, Morton & Gettys teamed up with Pilgrims’ Inn of Rock Hill for the Summer Hunger Challenge, and it was a great success.

“You all were AWESOME yesterday!” said Jennifer Gullatt of Pilgrims’ Inn on Wednesday. “The total for the food drive is 2,229.8 pounds! This is unbelievable!”

Morton & Gettys works with Pilgrims’ Inn year-round, but decided that since hunger doesn’t take a break, a special push was needed to bring in contributions in the middle of summer – a time when it’s too easy to forget the ongoing need.

Hence the Summer Hunger Challenge. Morton & Gettys promised to match donations up to 3,000 pounds.

Pilgrims’ Inn provides shelter, assistance and support services to the Rock Hill area’s most vulnerable women and children. The agency’s food pantry feeds up to 800 people during most months, and in the summer, that number can rise to 1,000.

The event is over, but the need is not. So keep giving. The items that help the most include:

• Dried foods (pasta, rice, quinoa, grits, etc.)
• Soups
• Snack items
• Canned beans
• Condiments
• Canned fruit
• Canned meat
• Tomato sauce
• Ravioli

To donate, contact Pilgrims’ Inn at 803-327-4227.
