York native James Duncan joins Morton & Gettys; practice will focus on family law

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – James D. Duncan, a York County native who returned to Rock Hill to practice law more than a year ago, is the newest associate at Morton & Gettys. His practice will concentrate on family law.

Duncan recently completed a clerkship with 16th Circuit Court Judge Daniel D. Hall, who’s based in York. Before that, Duncan practiced as a family lawyer for a year in Rock Hill. He also represented clients in workers’ compensation and personal injury cases.

A 2004 graduate of Wofford College with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Duncan worked for a number of years as a manager of a biomedical research lab in Charleston before attending law school. He graduated from Charlotte School of Law with a juris doctor in 2011.

Duncan is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina. His practice at Morton & Gettys will include many areas of divorce law in South Carolina, such as alimony, child custody and visitation. He also will draft separation, prenuptial and reconciliation agreements. He’s represented clients with grounds for divorce in South Carolina, and he’s worked with uncontested and no-fault divorce cases. He’s also represented grandparents in custody cases.

He joins Morton & Gettys partners Michael Smith and Elizabeth Smith Owen on the firm’s Family Law Practice Area team.

Duncan is active with the South Carolina Bar, serving on both the Education Law and Animal Law Committees. Born and raised in York, he’s been a member of Divine Savior Catholic Church since 1982.
