Smith listed among Top 10 South Carolina Family Law Attorneys

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Michael B. Smith, a partner at Morton & Gettys, is ranked among the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys’ Top 10 in the state for 2015.

Lawyers are included in the list of Top 10 South Carolina Family Law Attorneys only after a peer nominates them. A processing committee reviews the nominations, and the NAFLA Board of Governors makes the final determination.

Smith is the only attorney in York, Lancaster or Chester County to be included on the organization’s Top 10 Family Law Attorneys in South Carolina list.

A family law attorney since in 2000, Smith also is a certified family court mediator. In many South Carolina counties, including York, mediation is required before the case goes to Family Court. Smith also has been qualified by the magistrate and family courts as an expert witness on the topics of attorney’s fees and family law.

Smith is a native of Rock Hill. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at the University of South Carolina and a juris doctor at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell.

His practice at Morton & Gettys encompasses all aspects of family law, including divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support or alimony, visitation and relocation. He also handles adoptions, name changes and premarital agreements. He’s represented clients in cases involving common law marriages, and he helps negotiate and draft other domestic agreements as well.

Smith is a member of the York County Bar Associations and the South Carolina Bar.  He served on York County Bar Association committee that assisted with the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit’s transition to mandatory mediation.  He has an AV rating by Martindale Hubbell.

He is active in the community too, serving on various boards of directors and as a scoutmaster for Venturing Crew 276, BSA.  Smith is a founding member of York Preparatory Academy, a charter school in Rock Hill.
