South Carolina Lawyers Weekly honors John Gettys as Lawyer of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. – South Carolina Lawyers Weekly has named John Gettys as Lawyer of the Year for 2021.

The co-founder of Morton & Gettys law firm received the recognition at the annual S.C. Lawyers Weekly Leadership in Law Awards event in Charleston on Friday, Aug. 20.

He was one of 27 S.C. attorneys being recognized at the event, with the announcement of the one Lawyer of the Year announced that night. The Leadership recipients were notified ahead of time, but the name of the Lawyer of the Year was kept secret, even from the recipient, until the end of the event.

The Leadership in Law Awards honor outstanding members of South Carolina’s legal community who have excelled in their law practices, made significant contributions to society, and had an impact on the practice of law.

“I am deeply honored by this special recognition, which is particularly gratifying coming in the year in which our firm is celebrating its 20th anniversary,” John said.

All of the Leadership in Law honorees were featured in an insert in the publication’s Aug. 30 edition, and a longer, special profile of John as the Lawyer of the Year Year can be found in the publication’s Sept. 13 edition.

John’s wide-ranging practice focuses on real estate, probate administration and probate litigation. He is a preferred closing attorney for some the area’s best-known developers and builders, handling all types of residential real estate closings from purchases to re-finances and home equity lines of credit.

John is the current mayor of Rock Hill, elected in 2017. He is a former Rock Hill City Council member, representing Ward 4 from 2002-2010.

The Leadership in Law Awards were “created to honor legal professionals licensed and practicing law in the state of South Carolina, who have gone above and beyond in their profession and their community. These honorees represent the most influential leaders within our state’s legal community. They are nominated by their peers and selected by a panel of independent legal professional leaders based on professional accomplishment, personal accomplishment, and community involvement within the Palmetto State.” Learn more about the awards here: https://sclawyersweekly.com/leadership-in-law-faq/.
